eTA Eligibility & Border Entry Rules
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is electronically tied to your biometric passport. When arriving at Canadian airports, immigration officers verify your eTA digitally upon scanning your passport at primary inspection kiosks.
1. About eTA
Since March 15, 2016, eligible foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air have been required to obtain a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on their nationality and circumstances.
An eTA is an electronic travel authorization linked to your passport. Visa-exempt foreign nationals generally need an eTA to fly to or transit through Canada by air.
