Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport and is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Who needs an eTA to travel to Canada?

Citizens from visa-exempt countries travelling to Canada by air require an approved eTA before boarding their flight. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and travellers with a valid Canadian visa do not need an eTA.

How long is an approved Canada eTA valid for?

An approved eTA is valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires. You can visit Canada multiple times for short stays (normally up to 6 months per entry) as long as your eTA remains valid.

How fast will my eTA application be processed?

Most standard applications are reviewed and processed within 24 to 48 hours. If you select our Priority (6 hours) or Urgent Express (2 hours) service, processing is expedited with round-the-clock priority specialist review.

Do children need their own eTA?

Yes. Every eligible traveller, regardless of age (including infants and children), must have their own individual approved eTA linked to their passport before flying to Canada.

What if my passport expires after receiving an eTA?

Because the eTA is electronically linked to your specific passport number, you must apply for a new eTA whenever you renew or receive a new passport.
